Hi Tracy. Yes after being owned by James Howell who opened the big department store in St Mary’s Street (now House of Fraiser) the building did become a hospital. The Red Cross Hospital opened in 1914, later renamed the Prince of Wales Hospital in 1918 was on the corner of West Grove and The Walk. The main purpose of the hospital in WWI and WWII was to treat soldiers who had lost limbs. The Hospital evolved to provide other services such as occupational therapy and speech therapy, before eventually being closed in 1998.
