Brains Bottling Store was listed as being at 76 Helen Street in the 1909 Cardiff Trade Directory.  Following the expansion of beer trade, a row of cottages was acquired by the company and a larger site, between Nora Street and Helen Street, subsequently became the location for its ‘New Brewery’. The new brewery was needed as the existing Brains brewery in the centre of Cardiff was struggling to keep up with demand and more capacity was required.

The New Brewery on Helen Street would make beers that would be bottled in brown two-pint glass flagons aimed at satisfying thirsty customers when the pubs were closed on Sundays.  The distinctive red-brick tower was topped out in 1914 but the First World War prevented brewing operations from commencing until 1919.   The bottling line was also used to bottle non-Brains brews such as Bass, Guinness and Bulmers cider.  And in 1932 they also expanded into bottling soft drinks such as tonic water, lemonade and ginger beer. Brains stopped brewing beer at the Adamsdown brewery in 1982.  The bottling lines continued until the factory closed in 1993.

The terraced houses along Helen Street and Nora Street were demolished in the mid-1970s. The buildings of the former brewery were demolished in 1995. That autumn a competition was held for children in three local schools to come up with a name for the new park which had a budget of £170, 000.  With a state-of-the-art playground for children under 14.  The scheduled completion date was autumn 1997.

Brewery Park underwent extensive refurbishment and was re-opened in August 2022.  The event, featuring a highwire performance, acrobats, free running workshops, and Rwandan drumming troupe Ingoma Nyshya, was co-produced by No Fit State Circus in partnership with the local community, as part of the Clifton Street Festival celebrating Adamsdown and its community.

The refurbishment included a new multi-use games area with basketball hoops.  The children’s play area, which has been extended to include an area of grass for safe and informal play as well as play equipment, seating, railings, and safety surfacing.
